Tipitina’s French Quarter Celebrates New Year’s Eve with The Funky Meters & Stooges Brass Band
Tipitian’s French Quarter, 233 North Peters Street
Stooges Brass Band-The Stooges Music Group is the premier brass band in New Orleans. Their blend of traditional New Orleans brass with contemporary urban beats has gained them attention from around the USA and the world.
The Funky Meters-Formed during an informal jam during the 1989 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Art Neville, George Porter Jr., and Russe1l Batiste Jr., founded what would be the core of The Funky Meters. The history of founding members Art Neville and George Porter Jr. dates back to 1967, when keyboardist, Art recruited bass player, George, drummer Joseph (Zigaboo) Modeliste and guitarist Leo Nocentelli to form The Meters. The original Meters disbanded in the late 70’s. Today founding members Art Neville and George Porter Jr., are joined by New Orleans native Brian Stoltz on guitar and Russell Batiste Jr. on drums and are known officially as The Funky Meters. Funky Meters tap into the roots of The Meters musical heritage while taking the sound well into the future. Their trademark sound blends funk, blues, and dance grooves with a New Orleans vibe. The collective resume between the artists in this band speaks volumes for the level of musicianship that comes alive when they play together on any stage and the funk is still going as strong today as it was 40 years ago.
A limited number of special VIP packages for The Funky Meter’s New Year’s Eve Celebration at Tipitina’s French Quarter are available now. The VIP Experience will include: Dinner catered by Jacques-imos, Open Bar, Upstairs dining with a view of the River, Signed Commemorative Poster, Discounted Validated parking at Canal Place.

Kermit Ruffins & Big Sam’s Funky Nation
JOY Theater, 1200 Canal Street New Orleans, LA 70112 1200 Canal Street 528-9569
Kermit Ruffins-The 44-year-old New Orleans native lives it, plays it and sings about it, and nowhere is it more evident than when he discusses his craft… the swinging, good-time jazz that lured him in as a teenager and continues to whet his appetite even three decades and 10 solo recordings later. Ruffins legacy-in-progress includes co-founding the Rebirth Brass Band in 1983. Rebirths creation was inspired by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band which was credited with bringing influences of funk and contemporary bebop into New Orleans style brass bands.
Big Sam’s Funky Nation is a driving force of urban funk. Ryan White, of the Oregonian, says the band is “tight enough (and hot enough) to turn coal into a diamond!” The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.”
