Weekly series adds a Kid’s Zone in addition to its diverse musical schedule

The Algiers Economic Development Foundation (AEDF) announced today the musical line up for its 5th annual Wednesdays on the Point riverfront festival series. The free concert series, which offers live music, local cuisine and activities for the entire family is held every Wednesday, beginning June 6 – July 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. A special 4th of July concert will return for its second year entertaining guests from 5 to 9 p.m. prior to the riverboat fireworks extravaganza on the Mississippi River. “Wednesday’s on the Point is an important catalyst for local small business, which has yielded over $500,000 in economic impact in the Algiers community, states AEDF President Chris Kane. Adding, “We encourage everyone to come experience this new “New Orleans” tradition on the River.” All concerts take place at 200 Morgan Street where the Algiers Ferry Terminal meets the levee.

Wednesdays on the Point began four years ago in an effort to draw visitors toAlgiers Point during the slow summer months. Since its inception, the series has grown exponentially and is expected to draw more than one thousand guests to the banks of the Mississippi River each week. Each Wednesday on the Point concert is free to attend, offering live music, local cuisine and activities for the entire family.

This year AEDF announces the addition of a Kid’s Zone that features an inflatable basketball shooting area, a face painter and kids cuisine. The Kid’s Zone is sponsored in part by the recently opened Bounce-D-Lis inflatable kids playground located in Algiers, New Orleans.

Each year AEDF strives to highlight the cultural diversity of New Orleans through the musical curating of the band line up. This year is no different as the schedule features music from Cajun & Zydeco artists to Funk, Blues and Mardi Gras Indians. One thing remains the same and that is that Cajun Rocker Amanda Shaw will againheadline the finale show of the summer series. Says Shaw. “I am so excited to be back at The Point this year! I love playing the series because families can come out and enjoy great food and dance to great music. And its free… it doesn’t get better than that!”

“Guests to New Orleans have come as far as Europe to enjoy our summer series. It’s the only weekly cultural music series of its kind in New Orleans.” Says AEDF Executive Director Barbara Waiters. “Both Algiers businesses and guests benefit from having a weekly concert especially during the slower summer months.”

This year’s line up includes the following artists:

Ralston Crawford and Jazz explores the profound impact of New Orleans’ culture, and in particular the city’s jazz scene, on artist Ralston Crawford’s artistic output in the years after World War II-a significant but lesser known body of work. On view at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) from June 22-October 14, 2012, Ralston Crawford and Jazz explores the range of Crawford’s work with a special focus on his photography.
Featuring over 150 works, including photographs, prints, paintings, drawings, and films-many of which had never been exhibited-the exhibition illuminates Crawford’s strong personal connection to the city of New Orleans and the way musical and visual aesthetics intersect in the artist’s work.

“So much of what New Orleans is about-music, visual arts, architecture, performance-come together in the work that Ralston Crawford created here,” said Susan Taylor, NOMA Director. “We are honored to present Crawford’s personal interpretation of our city through his vibrant, visual art.”

Ralston Crawford and Jazz examines how the artist translated elements from jazz-such as syncopation, polyphony, and improvisation -into his visual work. As syncopation breaks up the rhythmic progression of a song, Crawford introduced “syncopated” forms to disrupt the overall compositions of his paintings. His photographs, lithographs, paintings, and films of the city’s musicians, cemeteries, weathered buildings, signage, street scenes, and boats at dock capture the essence of the New Orleans atmosphere.

“New Orleans jazz music profoundly altered Ralston Crawford’s creative process and output. His photographs and paintings took on the punchy and rhythmic quality of the music his subjects played,” said Russell Lord, Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at NOMA. “While his early paintings relied heavily on a one-point perspective, the works he created in New Orleans seemingly exploded off the canvas, as though the inherent freedom of jazz inspired him to abandon the earlier rules and create increasingly abstract works.”

Crawford considered his photographs both discrete works of art and launching points for other works. Throughout the exhibition, where a photograph is related to works across other media, the associated works are often displayed together-juxtapositions that highlight Crawford’s ability to exploit the unique properties of each medium and create a call and response structure frequently used in jazz performances.

Highlights from the exhibition, include:

Vintage photographs of iconic New Orleans establishments from the ’50s and ’60s, including Chris Owen’s Bourbon Street Club, Dew Drop Inn, Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club and Eureka Brass Band, that exemplify Crawford’s ability to capture the spirit and energy of a place through graphic, dynamic images made with the camera.

A set of original proof prints for the New Orleans: The Living Legends record series, which featured Crawford’s images on the covers. Photographs that have become synonymous with New Orleans and jazz culture.

Five short silent films that feature evocative shots of torn signs, neon advertisements, and Mississippi River scenes that demonstrate how Crawford’s unique eye gravitated to variations in form, texture and tone and found abstraction in the real world.

Candid portraits of beloved jazz musicians from the ’50s and ’60s, including Billie and Dede Pierce, “Wooden” Joe Nicholas, Bill Matthews, Oscar “Papa” Celestin, Paul Barbarin, John Casimir, and George Vital “Papa Jack” Lane, that emphasize the personal relationships Crawford developed with people of New Orleans and his desire to document what he felt was a particular monumental moment in jazz culture.

A selection of Crawford’s photographs from the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University that expands upon the main exhibition, illustrating Crawford’s engagement with all facets of the city of New Orleans.

The exhibition was organized and exhibited by the Sheldon Art Galleries, in Saint Louis, Missouri.

About Ralston Crawford

Ralston Crawford (1906-1978) is predominantly known for his abstract representations of urban life and industry, and his early work is frequently associated with Precisionist artists such as Charles Sheeler and Stuart Davis. Lesser known is the significant body of work he produced after 1949, which was inspired by his frequent visits to and time teaching in New Orleans. In 1985, the Whitney Museum of American Art presented a major retrospective on Crawford’s work, and his pieces are currently housed in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and National Gallery of American Art, among numerous others. The Grammy Award-winning trio last performed at VOODOO in 2004; their most recent appearance in New Orleans was at the historic re-opening of the Louisiana Superdome in September 2006. Green Day will be releasing three albums, a trilogy entitled ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! on Reprise Records. ¡Uno! will be released on September 25, ¡Dos! on November 13, and ¡Tré! on January 15, 2013.

Fellow headliners Neil Young & Crazy Horse also lead the 2012 VOODOO line-up which once again features artists from a variety of musical genres, while also reflecting the cultural gumbo that defines this historic and beloved American city. The preliminary line-up also includes: Skrillex; Justice; Tomahawk; Say Anything; Bootsy Collins; Gary Clark Jr.; and Preservation Hall Jazz Band. VOODOO’s full line-up of 150 acts will be unveiled in the coming months.

“I believe this year’s line-up is developing into something really special,” says Stephen Rehage, the founder/producer of VOODOO. “Green Day’s set in 2004 is one of the greatest performances in the festival’s 13-year history. Having them choose to do their only U.S. show of 2012 at Voodoo is pretty extraordinary. And the confirmation of Neil Young & Crazy Horse is epic. They are one of a handful of artists that you hope to have the privilege to work with at some point in your career. It’s what you dream of when you create something like Voodoo.”

Celebrated as one of America’s most eclectic festivals and the final musical event of the annual U.S. music festival season, this year’s VOODOO–Friday, October 26, Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28–will mark its 14th consecutive year.

Excitingly, new to this year’s annual musical celebration is on-site camping. A longtime tradition at the most renowned music festivals around the world, this is the first time it will be offered to VOODOO attendees. The inaugural camping experience will offer festival goers the chance to sleep under the stars amidst two hundred year old oak trees, picturesque lagoons and waterways of New Orleans’ historic City Park and located just steps away from the entrance to the annual Halloween weekend music celebration.

Proceeds from the 610 Stompers Ball Crawl will benefit The Roots of Music

Mardi Gras is over, but that doesn’t mean that the 610 Stompers have hung up their red satin jackets for the year. Saturday, June 9, don your favorite 80’s work out attire and join the Stompers and Splits for their 3rd Annual Ball Crawl through Uptown New Orleans. The all-male dance group will teach their signature dance routines at Grits Bar starting at 1pm before leading the crowd at 3pm to several neighboring watering holes for drinks, dancing, contests and fun. F&M Patio Bar will welcome the Ball Crawlers at 7pm for an after party complete with local food trucks and more dancing.

Registration is $30 in advance and $35 the day-of. It includes one free beer at each location; event T-shirt and registration gifts, including sweat bands and mustaches; entrance into fun contests and the after-party; as well as bragging rights to say you danced with the 610 Stompers! Register online: http://610ballcrawl.eventbrite.com/

Proceeds from the event will benefit The Roots of Music, a not-for-profit organization providing year round free music education, academic tutoring, and mentorship for youths in the Greater New Orleans area. Their marching band, The Marching Crusaders, have been selected to perform in the 124th Tournament of the Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA on January 1st, 2013. Funds raised at this year’s Ball Crawl will help deflect trip costs. “The 610 Stompers had a great experience in New York performing in the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. So when we heard that The Roots of Music were invited to California to perform in the Rose Bowl Parade, we decided to help them fundraise for the trip. New Orleans has so much musical and overall creative talent – it is great to be able to showcase it on a national level,” said David “Action” Jackson, Ball Crawl Co-Chair.

About the 610 Stompers:
The 610 Stompers are an all-male dance organization with a mission of giving back to the community through dance and entertainment. The group is 80 members strong of “Ordinary Men” of all ages and professions dedicated to entertaining the world with our “Extraordinary Moves.” They are featured performers in many parades, professional sporting events, and special events and fundraisers in the New Orleans area.

About the Roots of Music:
The Roots of Music offers children, ages 9-14, an escape and alternative to the dangerous after school street life of New Orleans. The program currently serves 132 low-income students, who begin with little or no musical experience, and work towards performing in the city’s largest middle school marching band, The Roots of Music Marching Crusaders.

About the Rib Room at the Omni Royal Orleans: The Rib Room and the Omni Royal Orleans were originally the creation of a group of prominent New Orleans businessmen. The location previously served as the site of the landmark St. Louis Hotel, where the phrase “free lunch” was inaugurated – a custom established in the hotel’s bar to help provide nourishment to noontime imbibers. To distinguish itself from the existing “Grand Dames” of New Orleans French Quarter restaurants, the Rib Room focused its menu on hearty beef dishes, catering to a predominantly male clientele. Although menu and dining trends have changed over the years, Prime Rib has remained the Rib Room’s “Tour de Force” among loyal patrons representing the city’s business, social and political elite as well as a host of celebrities who have dined at this famous New Orleans eatery including The Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz and Nicholas Cage, to name a few.

The Zagat-rated Rib Room boasts an exceptional wine list, premium cocktails, outstanding service, opulent décor and grand windows for the best people watching in town. The Rib Room is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, visit ribroomneworleans.com.

About Artesa Winery and Mark Beringer: Referred to as the jewel of Carneros, Artesa is owned by the Raventos family of Spain, whose winemaking history dates back to the mid-sixteenth century. The winery takes its name from the Catalan word for “handcrafted.” Today, Artesa focuses on producing small, ultra-premium lots of the varietals for which the Carneros and Napa Valley are best known. Mark Beringer, Artesa Winery Vice President of Production and Winemaking, is a fifth generation, award-winning winemaker from Napa Valley, who is proud to continue a family tradition of making high quality wines in California’s premier AVA’s. As the great, great grandson of Beringer Winery co-founder, Jacob Beringer, Mark has always aspired to make his contribution to California winemaking. He grew up immersed in the wine industry and knew from a very young age that winemaking was his calling.
