Saturday, Jan. 14 is the date for Spring 2012 semester auditions for the Heritage School of Music. New students are welcome!
The Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music is a free education program of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. It offers weekly instruction in jazz performance and theory by some of the best musicians and educators in the city.
Even though we’re already half-way through the school year, the Heritage School DOES accept new students for the Spring semester.
Auditions for the Spring 2012 semester will be held:
Saturday, January 14
10 a.m.
Cook Fine Arts Center (second floor)
Dillard University (2601 Gentilly Blvd., map)
The school is open to students ages 11 to 17 from throughout the greater New Orleans region.
Instruments taught include: woodwinds, brass, piano, bass, drums, guitar and voice.
Classes meet every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dillard University. Regular classes will resume on Jan. 21.
Beginning to advanced students are welcome. Beginning students must have completed at least one year of prior instruction on their instrument.
They should be able to play a major and minor scale, identify notes on a staff and play at least one song.
Students should own their own instruments and should bring them to the auditions (except for drums and pianos, which are provided).
More advanced students should be prepared to:
Perform a song (preferably a jazz standard) that demonstrates their full range of ability
Demonstrate an ability to improvise over a blues form in the keys of F and B flat
Play a chromatic scale (two octaves)
Sight-read an unfamiliar jazz composition
For pianists and bassists, demonstrate a fundamental ability to read chord changes
For drummers, demonstrate an ability to play “straight-ahead jazz time” (swing and shuffle beats) at different tempos
For vocalists, be able to sing an unfamiliar melodic phrase after hearing it once or twice
If you’re coming to the auditions, please download the student enrollment form from the Heritage School web site here and bring it with you to the auditions.
