During 2011 Free Yr Radio has visited Lollapalooza in Chicago, Outside Lands in San Francisco, Bumbershoot in Seattle, and CMJ in NYC. The Voodoo Experience in New Orleans will be the final stop on this year’s tour.

At each stop, Free Yr Radio partners with a different non-commercial station to host the Toyota Free Yr Radio Broadcast Stage. Each station broadcasts live from inside the festival, sharing and recording special live performances and artist interviews. For most of the stations, Free Yr Radio is an unprecedented opportunity for live remote broadcasts from inside some of the nation’s biggest music festivals.

In addition to providing on-site and live broadcasting equipment and support, Toyota’s Free Yr Radio makes financial contributions to each partner station and provides additional support to help raise funds through on-site activities. Over the past five years, Free Yr Radio has contributed more than $100,000 and more than 20 vehicles to stations across the country.

“WTUL is very excited to be partnering with Free Yr Radio for a third time at Voodoo Music Experience,” said Sonya Zhong, WTUL General Manager. “Our Voodoo broadcast would not be possible without the support of Free Yr Radio and we are proud to be partnering with an organization that shares the same passion for independent radio as we do at WTUL”.”

The broadcast will be available locally at 91.5 FM and globally at www.wtulneworleans.com . Additionally, festival attendees are encouraged to follow Free Yr Radio on Twitter to get real-time updates on upcoming performances and interview schedules at the Free Yr Radio Broadcast Stage.

“Toyota is proud to celebrate our fifth year of supporting non-commercial and indie stations across the country,” said Keith Dahl, Toyota National Manager of Engagement Marketing. “The Free Yr Radio program is a fun, engaging and meaningful way for stations to expand their reach and connect with new fans in an exciting environment.”

Since the program’s inception, Toyota’s Free Yr Radio program has brought together scores of independent stations including KEXP, The Current, KUSF and WLUW with some of the country’s top artists including Yeasayer, Calexico, Jamie Lidell, and Sonic Youth, in a series of activities developed to specifically build support of and access to independent radio.

I Can Has Cheezburger LOLcats join the Free Yr Radio Tour

In addition to the live broadcasts, interviews and performances, the Free Yr Radio Broadcast Stage also features a handful of fun activities including a new partnership with I Can Has Cheezburger that brings the company’s infamous LOLcats onto the festival grounds. Music fans will have the chance to hop in a I Can Has Cheezburger photo-booth Corolla and have their picture taken (and captioned) with their very own LOLcat. Images will be available onsite as well as to download at FreeYrRadio.com.

“We are thrilled to bring our underwear-on-the-head LOLcat to festival goers across the country,” said Ben Huh, CEO and founder of Cheezburger Network. “In all seriousness, partnering with Free Yr Radio is a great way for our fans to connect with I Can Has Cheezburger in a whole new way and add some unexpected hilarity to music festivals this summer.”

In addition to live broadcast, interviews, performances and LOLcat photos, visitors to the Free Yr Radio Broadcast stage will also have the opportunity to win a Prius or iPad 2 and create their own Shrinky Dink art.
