Bayou St. John through the CenturiesBayou St. John through the Centuries

Don’t miss Bayou St. John through the Centuries. Cassie Pruyn, author of Bayou St. John: A Brief History, will trace the evolution of Bayou St. John from prehistory through the present day. In this swiftly-moving talk, Pruyn will cover the bayou’s role as crucial “back door route” for French colonial settlers, its life as a bustling commercial waterway, its stint as an unauthorized houseboat haven, its WPA-era “beautification,” and much more. The talk will culminate with discussion and audience Q&A.

New Orleans Public Library

Our History

With origins dating back to 1843, the New Orleans Public Library has grown from a single French Quarter house with a few volumes into a city-wide system serving all of Orleans Parish with locations throughout the City.

Mission Statement, Vision Statement, Core Values, & Strategic Plan

In 2016, the Library developed, and the Library Board adopted, a Vision Statement, Core Values, and a three-year Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan was developed largely by staff, with in-person and online input from over 3,000 community residents. The plan is envisioned as providing the Library with community-focused direction as it moves through the remaining years of the current decade.
