Canal Street Lighting Ceremony – Home for the Holidays 2019

Don’t you love the holidays in New Orleans? The streets are filled with Christmas Wreaths and the Streetcars are decorated with holiday cheer. But, when does the holiday’s really begin? Many people believe that they begin with the Flip Is Switched on turning the Canal Street holiday lights on.

It’s a wonderful time of year in New Orleans.

The Downtown Development District and the Astor Crowne Plaza will be starting the holiday season down Canal Street on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. When the flip is switched at 5:30pm, a million lights will sparkle and twinkle down Canal Street and throughout Downtown New Orleans. You will hear the voices of Peter Claver and of course a special visit from Santa Clause. We also ask for everyone to bring an unwrapped toy.

About the Downtown Development District
The Downtown Development District of New Orleans (DDD) was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 1974 as the nation’s first assessment-based business improvement district (BID) to provide enhanced services in economic development, cleaning and safety. The DDD services the area bounded by Iberville Street, the Pontchartrain Expressway, Claiborne Avenue and the Mississippi River. The DDD is governed by an 11-member Board of Commissioners who represent a cross section of the diverse Downtown community. Appointed by local elected officials, our commissioners help guide the policies and programs of the DDD.
