Leave The Lights On!
Turning the lights off when leaving a room conserves energy and that helps you save some money, but did you know that leaving the lights on can actually help you save big bucks?
Do you worry that termites eat away the wood inside your home and you don’t know about it? There is a simple trick to find out whether your home has been infected by those pesky bugs. Just leave your lights on when exiting a room at night. If you happen to have termites, they will start flying towards the source of the light. You may have noticed that termites swarm around porch and street lights especially right now. “During swarm season, it is one of the best times to find out if you have termites, because they are coming out of their nests to find a mate and to start a new colony,” explains Joe Martin from Terminix. Swarming termite season usually begins around the second weekend of May and runs through June in Louisiana.

Prevention Is The Best Medicine
There are many things you can do to help prevent termites in your houses. Reducing all soil-to-wood contact around your house. Remove all lumber, wood, plants, mulch, paper, cardboard, etc., from around the foundation. Create a 4-inch barrier between mulch and your home. If possible, only the concrete foundation should touch the soil, with siding starting at least 6 inches above the soil. Keep plants a few feet away from your home for the best termite prevention. Make sure storm drains empty a few feet from the foundation and that your soil drainage is effective in minimizing overly moist soil. Fix leaky faucets and eliminate other sources of excess moisture, as that creates perfect conditions for termite invasions. During swarming season, take a quick walk around your property with the lights on to determine if termites are swarming from your structure and then turn your lights off. If possible, relocate lights to recessed areas away from doors and windows, as the light attracts the swarmers.
