New Culinary School To Open Its Doors In January

New Culinary School Class rooms are starting to take shape at the New Orleans Culinary & Hospitality Institute (NOCHI). The school, located at the corner of Carondelet Street and Howard Street, will opens its doors to students in January.

“I was excited to come to a school dedicated just for cooking,” says Tranique Brown, one of the the first students to start classes. Brown always dreamed of a career in the culinary industry. She has been cooking since she was ten, but started prepping food much earlier. Local colleges are offering cooking classes, but this is the first school that only offers cooking programs in the city.

During a sneak preview of the schools campus, which unfolds across five floors and over some 90,000 square feet, founders and local chefs were drumming up community support for the project. Celebrity Chef  Emeril Lagasse, through New Culinary School his foundation, pledged to match all gifts to NOCHI dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000. “We are a culinary capital, but we must provide education,” said  Lagasse who wants to see the city  become an “epicenter” of hospitality education.  “We have so many people that cannot go to the next step without a formal education,” agreed Dickie Brennan, one of the school’s co-founders and  proprietor of Dickie Brennan & Co. restaurant group.

In addition to Brennan, Ti Martin, a proprietor of Commander’s Palace and local developer George Brower co-founded NOCHI.

The program will  take about 6 months and student can choose between two options: Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts. The school includes five dedicated teaching kitchens, a beverage lab for wine and spirits programs, a retail café space on the ground level, separate classroom and office spaces for NOCHI and Tulane University, an event center, rooftop terraces overlooking views of downtown New Orleans, and more.
