The recent Morgus Madness event at the WYES Studios was a spectacular, science-themed Halloween celebration that proved the enduring appeal of one of New Orleans’ most beloved television icons: Dr. Momus Alexander Morgus. A figure of local lore since his show first aired in 1959, Dr. Morgus—portrayed by the late Sid Noel Rideau—is a mad scientist famous for his outlandish experiments and eccentric assistants, Chopsley and the talking skull E.R.I.C. This annual party, which is now in its third year, is an essential fundraiser for WYES, the local PBS member station.
The event offered attendees an atmosphere of delightfully spooky fun. Guests were treated to live, mad science-themed rock from The Consortium of Genius and enjoyed culinary creations and beverages from over 25 local eateries and sponsors, including classics like Katie’s, Dooky Chase’s, and Ralph’s on the Park. The highlight for many was the spirited costume contest, where prizes were awarded for categories like “Best Couple” and “Most Creative Homemade,” but especially for the “Best Morgus Show Character,” as fans dressed up as the doctor, his faithful sidekick, or even his landlady, Mrs. Fetish. The presence of Natalie Rideau, the daughter of the show’s creator, added a genuine, sentimental touch to the festivities. Beyond the entertainment, the money raised ensures WYES can continue its mission as the “Storyteller for New Orleans,” funding the national PBS programming and local documentaries that the community relies on. It was a successful night of paying homage to a local legend while supporting quality public television.
