Catch Some Cabbage This St. Patrick’s Day

The city of New Orleans has canceled all St. Patrick’s Day Parades and festivities due to Coronavirus concerns!

St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17th. And like every year, there will be lots of activities including parades happening all over the city. Head to one of your favorite parades and catch some cabbage this year. One of the more famous New Orleans St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the Irish Channel Parade on March 14.

However, there are plenty of other parades and parties leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. If you don’t want to miss any of the festivities, visit: https://neworleanslocal.com/st-patricks-day-festivities/

Catch Kisses, Flowers, Beads, & Cabbage

Unlike the Mardi Gras Parades, one of so-called signature throws during St. Patrick’s Day parades include vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, lemon, garlic and lots of cabbages. During St. Patrick’s Day parades, you will also get some flowers, but be prepared to give a kiss in return. Ramen Noodles and Irish Spring soap are other coveted items you can only catch at St. Patrick Day parades.

What To Do With All The Cabbages?

When you get home after the parade, you will most likely face a mountain of cabbage and ask yourself: What should I do with all this cabbage? No worries, we have you covered. Below find a few creative cabbage recipes:

Casserole

A cabbage casserole is rather easy to make. Quarter cabbage, and boil until tender. Drain thoroughly. Place cabbage in 9 X 13 baking pan. In a small bowl, mix some cream of mushroom soup and milk together. Pour over cabbage. Top with cheese. Bake at 400 degrees for 30-45 minutes. Casserole should be bubbling and cheese should be melted.

Stew

A cabbage stew is even easier to make. Get a big pot. Chop onions, bacon or pork, potatoes and carrots. You can also add garlic if you like. Fry onion and bacon or pork until onion is soft. Add the cabbage, fry for 10 minutes until it starts to soften. Add the rest of your vegetables and some spices you prefer, with beef stock. Simmer for about 30 minutes until all vegetables are done. And if you found you have way too much stew left over, freeze it and enjoy it once you are ready to eat some more cabbage.

Salad

If you are tired of cooked cabbage by now why not try a fresh and hearty cabbage salad? Wash and shred your cabbage and then add lemon juice, garlic, salt and maybe some dried mint.
