Kingsway Party

The legendary Kingsway Studio on the corner of Chartres and Esplanade opened its doors for only one night (10/26) celebrating producer Mark Howard’s latest book: “Listen Up! Recording Music with Bob Dylan, Neil Young, U2, R.E.M., The Tragically Hip, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Waits”.

The history of the studio was guarded and populated with equipment from Jimi Hendrix, Abbey Road, and a handful of guitars and microphones that should be in museums. The party was filled with friends who worked together to bring brilliant music to themselves and to the people who heard them. Mark Howard has done an amazing job at bringing the tools he has at hand to tell his story- story about bravery, a story about travel, a story about ways to not become unraveled.

Leo Nocentelli, Daryl Johnson, Cyril Neville and his son, Omari Neville, Hailee Rose, Lucy Ann, Billy Iuso, Joe Tullos and many others came out to show support. Daryl Johnson and other musicians shared stories from the time when they lived and worked at Kingsway Studio. “It was the only place in the world where you could build a circus tent in the billiard room with a broken down tape machine and play Bob Dylan’s guitar with his crib notes taped to it through Jimi Hendrix’s console and listen to it through the speakers from Abbey Road that first heard Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band and not be afraid,” Joe Tullos remembers.
