Civic Leadership Honored: The Tocqueville Society Gala

Event Date: November 13, 2025 |

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society Gala is the premier annual event for the United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA), recognizing the region’s most influential philanthropic leaders. Held this year on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the New Orleans Marriott, the black-tie dinner celebrated the spirit of community engagement and generosity that sustains vital programs across the region.

Inspired by a French Thinker

The Society is named after Alexis de Tocqueville , a 19th-century French historian and political thinker. In his seminal work, Democracy in America, Tocqueville observed and praised the American tradition of volunteerism and the willingness of citizens to band together to solve community problems—what he called the “art of association.” The Tocqueville Society embodies this ideal, recognizing individuals and couples who contribute $10,000 or more annually to the United Way’s mission.

The annual Gala is where the Society presents its highest award for exemplary leadership in community volunteerism and philanthropy. This year, the honor went to José S. Suquet, Chairman and CEO of Pan-American Life Insurance Group, recognizing his significant civic leadership, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Philanthropy and Prosperity

The event is more than a glittering dinner; it’s a critical fundraiser. Proceeds from the Gala support the United Way’s mission to eradicate poverty and build strong, thriving communities. UWSELA uses these funds to advance its “Blueprint for Prosperity,” an initiative focused on improving outcomes in education, health, and financial stability for families across seven parishes in Southeast Louisiana.

By bringing together business and civic leaders for a night of recognition and networking, the Tocqueville Gala affirms that philanthropic success and community impact go hand-in-hand. The generous donations made by attendees and sponsors are what allow the United Way to provide essential services, transforming the lives of thousands of residents struggling with poverty.
