Mardi Gras is a big celebration in New Orleans, and “Samedi Gras” means “Fat Saturday” in French. It’s part of the Mardi Gras season, which happens before Lent (a time when some people give up certain things for 40 days in the church calendar). Mardi Gras lasts for weeks, but the biggest, most exciting events happen on Fat Tuesday (the day before Lent begins).

Samedi Gras happens the Saturday before Fat Tuesday. It’s a fun day where there are parades, costumes, and people throw beads and other goodies to the crowd. The parades have huge floats that people ride on, and everyone is wearing colorful costumes. It’s a time to have fun, party, and enjoy good food before the more serious and quiet time of Lent starts.

So, Samedi Gras is just a part of the huge Mardi Gras celebration, which is full of music, dancing, and excitement!
